In Summer 2004, the Mobility Department of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management ("Lebensministerium"), in co-operation with the Austrian Energy Agency (AEA) and the Federal Branch Association of Driving Schools started to reinforce the stablishment of ECO-DRIVING in Austria. Results all over Europe proof that car-, truck- and bus-drivers can easily reach a fuel reduction of 5-15% by exercising an energy efficient driving style. The programme is part of the "klima:aktiv mobil" initiative of the government aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative consists of the following elements:

  • ECO-DRIVING Championship for drivers

In order to spread the idea of ECO-DRIVING among drivers and also driving schools an ECO-DRIVING Championship takes place every year. In 2006, 600 drivers were picked out of 3.000 applicants to compete in the Championship.

  • ECO-DRIVING Certificate for driver trainers

In pilot seminars driving teachers are educated and certified to ECO-DRIVING-trainers ("Spritspar-Trainer") with a certain quality standard.

  • Co-operation with fleet operators

In 2006 about 2.600 bus drivers and 4.600 train drivers participated in ECO-DRIVING trainings.

  • Awareness raising, marketing and public relations

The "Spritspar-Initiative" is accompanied by a media campaign, including radio spots, print media coverage, leaflets with tips how to save fuel etc.

    Golden Rules of ecodriving

    1. Shift up as soon as possible
Shift up between 2.000 and 2.500 revolutions.
    2. Maintain a steady speed
Use the highest gear possible and drive with low engine RPM
    3. Anticipate traffic flow
Look ahead as far as possible and anticipate to surrounding traffic
    4. Decelerate Smoothly
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear
    5. Check the tyre pressure frequently
25% too low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance by 10% and your fuel consumption by 2%.
