Campaign Background
ECO-DRIVING Europe (2001-2004)
ECODRIVEN builds up on the previous “ECO-DRIVING Europe” project. Target of this project was to accelerate the establishment of a European market for training lessons in an economic driving style as well as to integrate ECO-DRIVING in the driving licence curricula in European countries.
The project brought the following results:
General results:
- Overview and Analysis of Actions and Programmes
- Easily understandable and viable documentation of the methods and impacts of ECO-DRIVING ("Toolbox" for ECO-DRIVING) for dissemination
- Information Package on starting strategies for countries with few experiences
- Establishment of appropriate information tools for a ECO-DRIVING network
- Information Tools for an easy access to the information: Web Site (with a possibility for downloading a teaching application), brochures, workshops, mailing lists,...
- Establishment of a European ECO-DRIVING Network
Definition of "Quality Standards" for the services provided
- Definition of a "European Quality Standard for ECO-DRIVE training"
- Definition of a "Certification Procedure for Suppliers"
Six Pilot Actions
- Driving Schools (Spain): Integration of ECO-DRIVING into the driving licence curriculum.
- Driving Schools (Portugal): First steps with one driving school
- Car Fleet (Belgium): Experience in big car fleets
- Public Transport (Austria): More Comfort, less fuel, less cost
- Public Transport (Greece): ECO-DRIVING with GPS-monitoring system
- Experienced private Drivers (Netherlands):A software application to train drivers through the Internet
You can find the pilot actions here.
ECO-DRIVING Europe was designed to get the train on the tracks. The project induced a self- running process, which establishes a market and creates new jobs, a market which eventually needs no or only little public money. At the same time it saves fuel, costs and reduces emissions.
The involvement of the main stakeholders was essential for the success of the project. Therefore, networking as well as dissemination were cornerstones of the project. The proposers represented the main actors for ECO-DRIVING in Europe, the managing institutions of the big national programmes on ECO-DRIVING, members of the EnR (European Energy Network), the network of the national energy agencies as well as members of the OPET-network. Thus, the consortium was well suited to kick ECO-DRIVING an essential step forward.

ECO-DRIVING Europe (2001-2004)- Pilot actions
The aim of the project is to provide as much experience as possible. Therefore, besides the analysis of existing and documented case studies, new pilots were conducted. These case studies were placed in different market segments to study the different barriers and strategies and some in countries with little experience in ECO-DRIVING. This allowed a study of the applicability of strategies in different cultural and market settings.
The following pilots were launched:
- Driving Schools (IDAE, Spain)
- Driving Schools (AGEEN, former CCE, Portugal)
- Company with a large car fleet (VITO, Belgium)
- Public transport Graz (FGM-AMOR, Austria)
- Public transport Athens(CRES, Greece)
- Pilot training for current owners of a driver's licence (NOVEM, Netherlands)
- BEET - Benchmarking Energy Efficiency in Transport (NEA, Netherlands; AFT-IFTIM, France; CCV, Netherlands)
Results
- Documentation of the Pilot Actions
- Analysis of the pilot actions with a set of recommendations
- Facts and figures on costs, benefits and planning of ECO-DRIVING projects.
- Dissemination of the results, locally and in a European context
