The European-wide  Ecodrive campaign shall in the CR be implemented by promoting the concept of  the energy efficient way of driving via the instrument of energy labelling (which is already well known on the Czech market through white goods and other labelled products).

The new approach, which is (to be) taken, however is that not only the given appliance (the car) but also the consumers behaviour (the driver) are subject to labeling. Additionally to that, the rules of eco-driving will be communicated as if they were not only economically advantegous but contributing to traffic safety (i.e. keeping up to the prescribed speed limits brings the benefit of lower fuel consumption).

The goal is to present the economic style of driving as highly-esteemed and quality driving behaviour (the analogy with the characteristics of the product of the energy class A). Therefore, the major slogan of the national campaign is „Looking for A-class drivers“.

The A-class drivers will be seeked out via a nation-wide competition in which every driver may take part. The contest challenges drivers skills at eco-driving using the normed fuel consumption of his/her own car declared compulsorily by each car manufacturer as a reference level under which the driver tries to get with his real long-time fuel consumption on the distance of 5 thousand km under common traffic conditions.

The competition is supported by information materials – leaflets (30 thousand copies), rating tools (30 thousand copies), brochures on ecodriving rules (1 thousand copies), posters (1 thousand copies), and give-aways (1 thousand copies) –, press releases, and also „snack-type“ ecodriving courses which are organized during the automative related events such as car exibitions, mobility week etc.

The campaign has been officially started in April 2007 at the major car exhibition AUTO PRAHA and as of end of June 2007 nearly 500 people officially registered into the competition. Simultaneously a similar number attended the ecodriving courses. The competition as well as ecodriving courses will continue till the end of the year. After that the results and the best A-class drivers will be presented and invited to the final contest which is to be organized in the 1st Q of 2008.

The national ecodrive.org campaign supports numerous public as well as commercial institutions (Ministry of Industry and Trade of CR, Ministry of Environment of CR, Skoda Auto, Autoklub Skoda, Shell Czech Republic, Barum Continental, Scania Czech Republic, UAMK, LeasePlan Ceska republika s.r.o., capital city of Prague, SEVEn, Stredisko pro efektivni vyuzivani energie, o. p. s..).

The main communication platform of the campaign is the national website www.uspornajizda.cz at which interested visitors - drivers may register into the competition, check their on-going results, and get useful information about the campaign and the theme of eco-driving generally. The webpages then also serve as the „floor of fame“ for the A-labelled drivers.

    Golden Rules of ecodriving

    1. Shift up as soon as possible
Shift up between 2.000 and 2.500 revolutions.
    2. Maintain a steady speed
Use the highest gear possible and drive with low engine RPM
    3. Anticipate traffic flow
Look ahead as far as possible and anticipate to surrounding traffic
    4. Decelerate Smoothly
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear
    5. Check the tyre pressure frequently
25% too low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance by 10% and your fuel consumption by 2%.
