National ecodriving website

The national campaign “Malttia ja viisautta teille” started in 2005 and lasted for two years. Then it was co-financed by nine stakeholders including the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The campaign was coordinated by Motiva. Motiva has promoted ecodriving already many years even before the campaign and has contributed to the training programmes in Finland. Ecodriving is nowadays an obligatory part of the training for new drivers. In addition there are four training networks in Finland offering special ecodriving courses for drivers who already have a driving licence.

The “Malttia ja viisautta teille” -campaign has been renewed within the Ecodriven project and will be launched again in September 2007. The target group of the campaign is mainly car drivers.

The campaign consists of following elements:

Ecodriving quiz at the website

- At the national website there will be an ecodriving quiz. The questions change every month. The ones who answer the quiz are participating a raffle and can win a free ecodriving training course each month. Altogether 12 training courses are donated during the campaign.

Free training for the company key personnel

- Free training is also offered to companies and other employers. Free training is offered to the key personnel who are in charge of the vehicle policy in the company. Altogether 100 training courses are offered for free. The target is to integrate ecodriving training of the personnel in the companies’ environmental policies.

Demonstrations and presentations at events and car shows

- During the campaign some practical ecodriving demonstrations are given in few bigger public events and possibly also in car retailers’ weekend shows. Also private demonstration events are arranged together with car leasing companies and car dealers for their major customers.

Awareness raising, marketing and public relations

- The marketing material includes a leaflet, manual fuel meter and a poster. Posters are distributed to car shops around Finland. The leaflets and manual fuel meters are available for the co-operators to distribute.

    Golden Rules of ecodriving

    1. Shift up as soon as possible
Shift up between 2.000 and 2.500 revolutions.
    2. Maintain a steady speed
Use the highest gear possible and drive with low engine RPM
    3. Anticipate traffic flow
Look ahead as far as possible and anticipate to surrounding traffic
    4. Decelerate Smoothly
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear
    5. Check the tyre pressure frequently
25% too low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance by 10% and your fuel consumption by 2%.
